Booth Rental vs. Commission: Which Pay Model Fits Your Salon?

One of the biggest decisions a salon owner makes is how to pay technicians. The two most common models in the U.S. nail industry are booth rental and commission — each with real trade-offs.

Booth rental

The technician pays a fixed weekly or monthly fee for their station and keeps everything they earn. It gives techs independence and gives owners predictable income, but less control over scheduling and service standards.

Commission

The salon takes a percentage of each service (often 40–60%) in exchange for supplies, marketing and a steady flow of walk-ins. It is easier for new techs to start with no upfront cost, and owners keep more control over the client experience.

Many salons offer both and let techs choose as they grow. Whatever you pick, put it in a clear written agreement so everyone knows what is included.
