Grit
How coarse a file is — the lower the number, the more it takes off.
80 and 100 grit shape hard product; 180 refines; 240 and above are for the natural nail and for smoothing before polish. A buffer is finer still and is there to shine, not to shorten.
Using a low grit on a natural nail is how plates get thin.
